Thanksgiving...
I brought up the idea of a Thanksgiving party at our apartment last week to Clinton and since then things have been swinging in full gear. We invited some of my and his adult students a few friends and all the English friends staff. We're expecting somewhere around 25 people, 30 tops. We've been gathering up a whole lot of food this past weekend and this week. We're not exactly gonna make a typical thanksgiving feast, but we're at least trying to make a few things that are authentic. Thanks to an army friend that hooks me up with import food occasionally, we got some turkey and are making sandwiches and also will have pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Course, that's amongst a lot of other stuff like spinach and salsa dip and spaghetti, mash potato tortilla wraps and kinilaw (a filipino fish dish). We started to make stuff today and will probably be scrambling by the time Thursday rolls around. We still have to work that day, but everybody's coming over afterwards. It should turn out to be pretty cool. It's the first time I've ever really tried to host anything and am looking forward to it. I don't think I'd even attempt it though if Clinton, one of my roommates, didn't know how to cook. I've been learning little bits of things here and there since he's been here. He seems to just have the knack of throwing things together in the right amounts. So, for Thanksgiving, he's the one who really knows how to make everything. I watch and listen and follow directions and pretty much just follow along with what he says. With what I have had of his at home, I've no doubts that everything we make will be more than tasty.
I have one week of vacation left in my current contract, so last weekend I booked and bought a ticket for Thailand and got a Lonely Planet to go along with it. I'll only be gone a week, but I'm really looking forward to it. It'll be the week before
Christmas and a nice break. I wanted to go during a korean holiday, but waited to long to try and book my ticket. It's
turned out fine though, cuz at least now I get to go...plus I got a really good ticket price too. I'm pretty much as white as
I could possibly be, so I'm hoping to come back with at least a little more color. The only down side is that I had to call up
my mom and ask her to pick out a suit, any swimsuit, and quickly send it on over here in time for when I go. When I went to the Philippines, my other suit basically fell apart and I had to toss it out. I'm pretty much positive that I won't like what
she's sending, but at least it'll be better than nothing. Beggars can't be choosers. In around 3 weeks and I'll be beachside browning and buying other fun Thai textiles to treasure. Wahooo!!!!!!!
